Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the physical practice of Yoga that encourages work with posture, breath, and cleansing practices to prepare the body for meditation. The name Hatha yoga, is made up from ‘Ha’, meaning sun and ‘Tha’ meaning moon; denoting the union of opposites. ‘Hatha’ also means force or determined effort, and ‘Yoga’ translates as joining together or union. Therefore the meaning of Hatha yoga implies that a lot of strength and discipline is required to unify opposing forces, bringing together body and mind.

Hatha yoga first appeared in the 9th or 10th century, differing from existing practices of yoga as Hatha practitioners gave more importance to the physical aspect of practice. Although preceding yoga practices and Hatha yoga shared the common goal of controlling of the mind and reaching a state of bliss or enlightenment, Hatha practitioners held the belief that this could be more easily achieved by means of various physical practices. It is from these beliefs that the physical asana practice the world now embraces came from. A Hatha Yoga class today includes a variety of non strenuous asanas that are held for an extended period of time whilst practicing deep breathing techniques.
